SETA Funding Assistance

Maximise Your Training Budget with SETA Grants

At Cham-Training, we help you unlock the full potential of SETA (Sector Education and Training Authority) funding so you can invest in your team without straining your budget. SETA funding is a government initiative aimed at upskilling the South African workforce by providing financial assistance to employers who actively engage in training.

Funds are collected via the Skills Development Levy (SDL) and redistributed through Mandatory and Discretionary Grants.

Types of SETA Grants Available

1. Mandatory Grants (20% of SDL)

Employers who contribute to the SDL can claim back 20% of their levies in the form of a Mandatory Grant, provided they:

  • Submit a Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) and an Annual Training Report (ATR) by the deadline (typically April 30th).

  • Are registered and compliant with their relevant SETA and SARS.

  • Have documented employee training programs in place.

Key Benefit: Recoup a portion of your training investment while ensuring your staff benefit from structured development opportunities.

2. Discretionary Grants (Up to 49.5% of SDL)

These are awarded at SETA’s discretion to support training aligned with scarce and critical skills. Eligible funding includes:

  • Learnerships (employed and unemployed learners)

  • Internships & Work-Integrated Learning

  • Skills Programs & Short Courses

  • Bursaries for Employees

  • Apprenticeships

Applications are reviewed based on industry demand and available SETA funding.

Key Benefit: Reduce training costs with access to government-funded initiatives that also improve your B-BBEE Skills Development score.

Who Qualifies for SETA Funding?

Companies registered with SARS and paying the Skills Development Levy (SDL)
(required for businesses with a payroll over R500,000).
Organisations that submit a valid WSP & ATR annually.
Employers actively involved in skills development aligned with national priorities.
Note: Small businesses with a payroll under R500,000 may be SDL-exempt but can still qualify for selected funding programs.
